Teaching for Empowerment

Hallig, Waddensea, by L. Michelsen 2

The concept of the Kiel School of Sustainability is to bring “thinkers” and “problem solvers” together. Our aim is to enable students to analyse issues of sustainable development under a multidisciplinary perspective and empower them to take action in order to create sustainable solutions.

For postgraduate students the Kiel School of Sustainability offers a range of taught Masters programmes each focusing on different aspects of sustainable development. These programmes comprise two years of full time study including three taught semesters and an individual research project of 6 months duration. The School offers more than 70 modules in English language and several of the Masters programmes are taught fully in English.

For both undergraduate and postgraduate students the Kiel School of Sustainability offers the Changemaker Curriculum for Sustainable Development and Social Entrepreneurship. The curriculum teaches students of all Bachelor, Master and PhD programmes how to create own projects for sustainable development.

The list with modules offered for School of Sustainability students in the winter term 2018/19 can be found here

Fees and other costs

There are no tuition fees, but every semester you will have to pay the "semester fee" of approx. 130 € to the “Studentenwerk” plus a one-off registration fee at the first registration at the CAU of approx. 60 € .

Having done this you will be able to get cheap lunches at the canteen (German "Mensa") and free rides with the public transportation within the greater area of Kiel.

StartUP Schleswig-Holstein e.V.

StartUp SH

The School of Sustainability is member of the association „StartUP Schleswig-Holstein e.V.“. The aim of the association is to support the start-up culture in Schleswig-Holstein. The association has been founded from the “Innovation orientated network Schleswig-Holstein”. Different universities and university near actors of the state combine their competences to strengthen the variety of start-ups in the region. The project takes place from 01.01.2017 until 31.12.2021 and will be funded with around 6.9 million euros from the European Fund for regional development (EFRE).

The role of the School of Sustainability

In universities one finds a lot of potential, but a low amount of opportunities for start-ups. With accordance to the Social Entrepreneurship Program the School of Sustainability supports start-up teams during the development and implementation of their social entrepreneurial start-up idea. Students familiarize their selves with strategies, concepts and actors from social entrepreneurship and develop their own project idea and pilot phase. The Social Entrepreneurship Program contributes to the development of innovation supporting structures for social entrepreneurial innovations as well as to the establishment for a sustainable development of the state Schleswig-Holstein.
